Published by Founder on 20/08/2003 (2563 reads)
Fort Nelson, a 19th Century fort on Portsdown Hill, was just one of many fortifications commisioned by Lord Palmerston and is now occupied by the heavy artillery museum of the Royal Armouries.

When in the 19th Century the Fort was occupied by allied forces a Colour Sergeant was found to be drunk on duty and he was promptly arrested and placed in a cell to await a court martial. During his time in his cell and unable to cope with the embarasement of being found drunk the unfortunate Colour Sergeant committed suicide by hanging himself in his cell. His ghost is now reputed to haunt Fort Nelson around the cell area of the Fort.
